Covid-19.
A virus that became a pandemic that became a time, a place, and a state of mind. Over 7 million would die due to causes related to the coronavirus Covid-19 but when I wrote and released this short story in four parts back in mid-2020, we were still getting our heads around what was happening and still thinking “I can’t wait until next month when this is all over” or “I’m bummed I’ll have to go back to the office next month when this is all over”.
Little did we know we were in for years of weirdness that would bring out the best in us (the breadmaking, the language learning, the socially-distanced singalongs) and the worst (inspo-TikTok-quarantine advice from celebrity’s mansions, vaccine-deniers, The Great Toilet Paper War) and remind us that the world’s true heroes are the first responders, the healthcare workers, and the caregivers while the true villains are racists, those unwilling to aid their fellow man by putting on their goddamn mask, a worrying amount of our elected officials, and all too often the three of those rolled into one.
Enjoy four fast fixes of lockdown life and remember a time when we sheltered in place, quarantined with our loved ones until they almost weren’t our loved ones anymore, and did our best to not be part of the problem.
Grab that buttery popcorn, start slurping on a carbonated beverage that will send that sweet, sweet sugar zooming to your brain, and feast your eyeballs on Staff Relief, a new workplace comedy motion picture in the tradition of Office Christmas Party, Platoon, and Titanic.
Staff Relief follows the misadventures, romantic and otherwise, of a group of hotel workers during their annual staff party.
Yes, I know it’s a screenplay and not an actual movie but just use your imagination, OK? Also, Cillian Murphy or Mr Spielberg, if you’re reading this…let’s get those cameras rolling.
